Poem - Look past the disability!

I started writing poems a few years a go. I have wrote a few. I haven't wrote one in a while, but will write one again in the future. I was born with a spinal condition/disability called Scoliosis. There is a post on my blog about my Scoliosis story, please check it out. Below is a poem i wrote in May 2018, about seeing the person first, before their disability, which is what people should do. You can share my poem if you want to! I am sorry this is a short blog post, i just wanted to share one of my poems with you. My next blog post will be longer. There is a person behind the disability. No need to judge them or stare. Disability, another word for what a person has. Ask, learn if you don't understand, there is a person there. Differently able sounds better to me. The person has less ability, not no ability. There is more to them than that. It's the ability they do have and the person they are, that they want you to see. (C) SJB 2018

My Scoliosis Story

I thought i would share my Scoliosis story with you. I was born with it. I was poorly when i was a baby and i was tube fed. When i was three years old i had a cleft palate repaired. When i was at junior school I wore a corset brace for a while because of Scoliosis, which was uncomfortable to wear sometimes. After a while I didn't need to wear it anymore. Some people that have Scoliosis have surgery for it. Years a go, a doctor said it would be too dangerous for me to have surgery so I chose not to have it. I am short in stature for my age because of Scoliosis, i am 4ft in height. I can walk, but when I go out I use a wheelchair, (as you can see in the photo below), because I get tired walking. Every 4 or 8 months, (depends if my results are good) I usually have lung function appointments at a hospital, but i haven't been going for appointments for a while, because of the Corona virus. Scoliosis can affect organs as well. Before you read this blog post, did you already know what Scoliosis is? Had you not heard of it before? Do you know anyone that has Scoliosis?
